Audio Drama Survey Results 10-3-14

Friday, October 3, 2014
Posted by XERO
Here are the results of the survey I put out last week.  Unfortunately, I was only able to collect info from 14 participants, then the services wanted to hit me with (an unexpected) bill.  There's still enough data to give you all a small glimpse of our Audio Drama Community.

If you're a producer of a show, or planning to produce a show, then this is a sampling of how audio drama consumers actually think and operate. Hopefully audio producers can use this data to plan out the best production for his show.

A few notes:
  • People are far more willing to explore longer shows than I anticipated.
  • Although people are using different sources for getting audio dramas, they still tend to download rather than stream, or simulcast.
  • People who use RSS are generally more open to longer shows than people who don't.
  • People who don't know what RSS is aren't as open to longer shows, but still like to explore.

Please list any services that you like to use that are NOT given in the options above.

Dystopian Movies and Stuff

Tuesday, September 16, 2014
Posted by XERO

imagine a world where...
bad stuff happens.
dun dun DUUUUNN!!
I've been doing a lot of research about the genre of dystopia ever since I found out that the audio drama I'm working on is not post-apocalyptic, so much as it is dystopia. It's becoming more and more apparent to me that people have no idea what the genre dystopia means.

Wikipedia describes it like this:

A dystopia (from the Greek δυσ- and τόπος, alternatively, cacotopia,[1]kakotopia, cackotopia, or anti-utopia) is a community or society that is in some important way undesirable or frightening. It is the opposite of autopia. Such societies appear in many artistic works, particularly in stories setin a future. Dystopias are often characterized by dehumanization,[2]totalitarian governments, environmental disaster,[3] or other characteristics associated with a cataclysmic decline in society. Dystopian societies appear in many sub-genres of fiction and are often used to draw attention to real-world issues regarding society, environment, politics, economics, religion, psychology, ethics, science, and/or technology, which if unaddressed could potentially lead to such a dystopia-like condition.
The thing that made it apparent to me, was looking up some of the things that I found as influences. First of all there's the book and movie 1984, government who keeps its citizens at a very low level of knowledge about what's going on in the world while they continue to push a war in another country. At first they're always talking about how they're winning the war, then it seems as if they're pushing a new message, that they've "always been at war with Eurasia."

Another glimpse into this kind of genre for me was an anime entitled "8 man after." It's a world in which people accept and liberally partake in cybernetic fusion in order to correct human abnormalities.

But the big kickers for me in the last decade or so were the matrix, The Terminator trilogy, and a movie based on a comic book called V is for Vendetta. All of the shows sold show us a future in which we wear our technology takes over, or the government takes over, or both. They live in a world that is suppressed by the authority that they have given their rights and liberties to, & I find that to be a very scary concept.

The problem for me was that they always lived in some type of war torn worlds, similar to that of the Book of Eli or the Terminator Salvation, and it leaves me with the idea that this is all referred to as post apocalyptic: a world that is recovering from some huge disaster.

Now that I've covered these bases about where he's ideas come from, I'd like to share with you about my journey about where they are going and where they could end up in the near future.

A few years ago, there was a string of movies that emerged to the mainstream it seems to just revel in, and glorify magic and pagan ideologies. To name a few, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, in the Twilight series. All of the series seem to be based around. Magic and darkness. I felt like they left little hope for the average person but, that's to be expected from the fantasy genre. Genre that exalts those with extraordinary abilities and super powers. They glorify the people who are different, and encourage those who are different enough or powerful enough to confront any oppressor, Especially a character who is written to be the Messiah.

Shortly after the emergence of the hot topic fantasy movies, there was the Hunger Games. When I first heard about the Hunger Games, it made my stomach turn because I thought it was going to be the same thing as these fantasy movies. Glorifying ideas and concepts that I absolutely detest. But what I found was something completely different. It wasn't a fantasy world with fantastic characters, but it was something far more realistic. It was a horrific projection of what our world could actually become without the need of magic or superpowers or aliens or anything like that. This is the beauty of the dystopian genre.

In the dystopian genres, any jerk with the audacity to step out of line get shot in the face or tortured or something like that, and it's only the jerks who have the power to evade or withstand opposition that make any kind of ripple effect. Dystopian genres are not built on the idea of a certain individual who is just so glorious, but there find their strength in the idea that we are all stronger together. The heroes in the dystopian genres understand that it's selfishness and individualism that got us into the crappy future that were in in the first place. And so we as the society, or the people, or the family, or whatever group is the main characters, have to work together and learn to understand each other if they want to find any kind of piece or escape from their oppressors.

Something that I find in a lot of dystopian books, comics, and movies is that we often fall victim to our own devices. In 1984 we fall victim to our government, a government that we put into power. In the Matrix its technology that supposed to make our lives easier, but we eventually become so lazy that we stopped thinking for ourselves and give that right over to the machines. In the Terminator series, it's no doubt a desire to win a war, because all of the machines are built that way. In the anime 8 man after, mankind simply refuses to admit that we will eventually decay and die and it's that fear of death that drives us on to fuse with cybernetic body parts. And in the newer movies like Hunger Games and divergent, we see once again a government that has overthrown society.

Which brings me to my last point. I think that people are being amazingly unfair in the comparison between Hunger Games and Divergent. The reason that they seem so similar, it's because they're the same genre! It's like taking a rap song and comparing it with any other rap song, and then saying they're just alike because they're the same genre. When you add in the fantasy movies that I mentioned before, its like criticizing the rap song for not being more like a Disney pop song, and then saying that those two rap songs are exactly the same. That's ridiculous!
According to whoever made this chart, trendsetters can't tell the difference between fantasy and dystopian movies. So, we'll just lump them all together and look at it sarcastically!

There plenty of differences between those two particular movies, but I think people are either too dumb, or too lazy to see the differences because of the mild similarities. Both movies are set in the future. Both movies depict an oppressive government. Both movies divide society into groups or factions. And both movies are centered around a heroine rather than a hero.

But there are many differences that I see with Hunger Games and Divergent. I think such a harsh criticism is being drawn because people absolutely seem to cringe at the ideologies presented within Divergent, while they are currently planning for the ideologies presented in The Hunger Games. It's not the government's actions that I'm talking about, but the heroes and their situation. The heroine in divergent is criticized for being too much like an evangelical Christian, or at least how the rest of the world views evangelical Christians. The heroine of the Hunger Games is a better reflection of what today's secular adult women wish they could be.

The heroine in The Hunger Games is no doubt a strong individual, who's willing to sacrifice love for her motives, while the heroine of Divergent reluctantly pursues your love interest while holding back from sexual advances.

The heroine of Hunger Games is already strong, while the heroine of Divergent struggles to gain strength.

The character from divergent comes from what appears to be a religious family, with two loving parents, and strong morals, as well as highly esteemed within the community. The character from The Hunger Games obviously comes from a broken home with very little prestige.

And finally the contrast of opinions between both girls view of glamour and vanity.

There were a lot of other comparisons that could be made by someone with more time and intellect, to look into the issue then me, but thats all i care to write about right now.

DISCLAIMER: Please Read Before Listening

Thursday, July 31, 2014

DISCLAIMER:
I think that before tonight's big release, that I should be clear with our audience and critics about a few things. The next few episodes that we engage in are going two be intense. I'm not saying that because I want you to be excited about it (even though I do), but I'm saying it so you can decide whether or not you want to tune in.  I do this out of respect for our audience. I don't think that this series is going to be for people who are easily offended or scared. There are parts of the show that borderline on horror. There are things in episode 2 that are downright difficult to listen to.

You might think that I'm shooting myself in the foot releasing this kind of disclaimer early on, but I really want to be able to detach the story you're about to hear from the personality that most of you know, and from the person I am. Although the characters are in some way extensions of myself, the story itself is analogous to the world that we currently live in.

I take a lot of creative liberties in entertaining a future that most of you have already interpreted, and infused those ideas with the somewhat unique perspective that I personally hold when confronted with these ideologies myself.

The result is dystopian. And while the content can be intense and sometimes seems unnecessary, I hold no regret in my finished work. I truly believe that I have written a parable that is a suitable and appropriate reflection of our world.

As always, we thank you for your support, and we thank you for listening.

hi-ya gang! I'm very new to the VA world. I'm looking to make some friends via my new project.
I started working on a script for an audio-play right after college, but never took the time to finish it....until this week. This story is at least 5 years in the making, and I have most of the story arcs for the next 2 expansions.
============================================
The story is called "The Last Day: Origins", and it is the beginning of a much larger work about the goings on in a walled city during the last years of Earth. no one knows that the world will end, or even expects it. they are just living their lives.
The main drama revolves around a boy named Silace, who acquires strange new skills after a visit to a new Full-dive Virtual reality Arcade, and his buddy Steve who is kind of a genius. The creator of the Arcade Kison, finds himself in a desperate situation as he tries to recreate the image of his daughter, Allison. There are a few other characters who carry the plot as the stage is set in the post apocalyptic, totalitarian city.
the entire 5 episode script sets the pace, lines up the characters, and leads us up to the world's final adventure.
============================================
I am looking for VA's to cast the 4 main characters, and 2 main supporting characters.
Main Character:
Silace (self cast) here's the only voice acting I've ever really done. there are skit scattered across the whole album.
Steve - (Silace's Best friend) a nerdy, but cocky teen with an aggressive "take control" attitude, and a great since of humor
Kison - A stern and focused scientist turned maniacal after certain "tragedies" befall him (basically lex luthor, turned joker)
Allison - (may need to be Dual cast) Has the sweet side of an innocent young girl (6-10 years old) Think White Queen from Resident Evil
, or Tima from the Anime Metropolis

Allison2 - her other side speaks with all the aggression, sarcasm, anger, and vindictive qualities of an embittered 20-something Goth woman (Think Ginger from the werewolf movie, Gingersnaps)

UNCLE SCOOTER:
And this must be the lad we talked about on the phone.
SILACE:
Why are you a robot! (gasps)
STEVE:

SILACE:

STEVE:
What is WRONG with you?
UNCLE SCOOTER:
(laughing)
oh, it's alright.  i know it's a little shocking at first.  You see, young fella,  i lost about 85% of my body in the war...
MR.KISON:
Some time this evening, the system was not only left RUNNING, but, for some reason, it's also damaged!  Now I want answers!  I want to know why there were 2 kids in the main systems room UNATTENDED!  That room's not even open to the PUBLIC! I want to know WHO they are, WHAT they were doing!
(off to the side)
Jameson!
JAMESON:
Yes sir.
MR.KISON:
Lock the main halls and all the exits.  Nobody leaves this room until I know who was on that shift.

(different sCENE- tHIS IS THE SCENE WHERE KISON REVEALS WHAT MADE HIM FINALLY CRACK)
KISON:
Absolutely honey.  but right now daddy needs to make sure that those mean old Neo Soldiers don't try to take you away.
ALLISON:
Huh?  NEO Soldiers?
KISON:
My vitals are constantly being monitored by NEO!  Right now they're probably wondering why I've died so many times, and when they FIND you here.... You know that they'll just want to use you for their own devices, don't you?
ALLISON:
You're Bluffing!
MR.KISON:
You think I didn't plan for this?  you think you're really in control here!  This is just a test to see if you're worth the final plan my dear!  When NEO Gets here, they're gonna see you have full virtual simulation capabilities, and you know what that means.
ALLISON:
You think they'll try to turn me back into a video game?
KISON:
Probably dear, or something worse.  But don't worry.  daddy's not gonna let them do that.
ALLISON:
(THINKING OUT LOUD)
they'll try to turn me into a training arcade for their soldiers....
KISON:
(SAD MOMENT OF INSANITY)
they'll try.  We'll just play along with whatever they say, for a little while...heh...they tried before didn't they honey?  They tried to take you away.  But I figured out a way to ..heh, heh, get you back...heh, heh, heh, didn't I? (chuckles)They think they can take you away from me, heh, heh, ha! Ha! but Daddy, heh, heh, heh, heh. Daddy has a better idea. (Maniacal laughter)

Sample/Context Scene

(KISON IS STUCK IN ANOTHER MEMORY)
(STATIC AND GLITCHING AS THE SOUND COMES BACK IN)
MOM:
(STATIC/GLITCHY VOICE)
Abby!  Abby?  do you hear me talking to you?  You're a bad, bad boy Abby!
MR.KISON:
(disoriented)
What?  Mom!  what are you doing here?
MOM:
Don't you use that tone of voice with me young man!  If anything you should be saving that voice for the bullies at school.  Hmmm?
MR.KISON:
Huh?  The bullies...at....
MOM:
You know what your problem is Abby?  Your too soft.  That's right you're just a whiny little brat with no bite.  Aren't you.  Just wait until your father gets home.
MR.KISON:
Ugnh...papa?  where..where is he?
ALLISON:
Seriously Kison!  Are you gonna just sit there and let her talk to you like that?
MR.KISON:
(still disoriented)
But it's my mom...i can't just..
ALLISON:
Of course you can. Watch.
(ALLISON SHOOTS MOM)
SOUND: GUN COCKS
SOUND: GUN FIRES
SOUND: BODY HITS THE FLOOR
MR.KISON:
Ahhhhh!
ALLISON:
See.  Now was that so hard?
MR.KISON:
You're insane!  I-I know what you're trying to do to me...
ALLISON:
I'M TEACHING YOU!!!  Teaching you how to get what you WANT so you don't have to keep running to ME FOR IT!
(ALLISON TURNS TO GUN ON KISON)
SOUND: GUNFIRES
MR.KISON:
Ahhhh!  You shot me!
ALLISON:
If you ever call me insane again, it won't be in the leg next time!  I can do whatever I want to do to you in here, as many time as I want to do it.
MR.KISON:
(STARTS TO PANT AND WIMPER)
ALLISON:
If I wanna shoot you in the head...
SOUND: GUN FIRES
ALLISON:
...I can do that!  I control this world.
MR.KISON:
(gasps for air)
*cough* *cough*  Ahhhh!
ALLISON:
So you can quit begging for DEATH.  You can't die in here!
MR.KISON:
no,no, no, no....GET ME OUT OF THIS PLACE!
ALLISON:
(gently)
Aw.  Look at you.  Your're crying like a little baby.  Aw, come here....shhh, shhh, shhh.  Abby, you're just gonna have to learn faster, that's all.
MR.KISON:
(sobbing)
ALLISON:
hmmm.  Well, I tried.  Maybe your dad can beat some sense into you.
PAPA:
Boy!  Are you still crying!?!  What did I tell you about crying boy!
MR.KISON:
Oh no.  Not him.  No papa, i wasn't...
PAPA:
Oh and you're gonna lie to me too?  Looks like all them beatings I gave you weren't good enough.  But I'll fix ya.
(END SCENE)

Audition Scene

ALLISON:
Now here's the scenario Kison. The world isn't fair, and you, little maggot, have found a way to capitalize on the unfairness.  haven't you?  I mean, that's the whole reason I was created.  Right?  To give people things that they can't naturally have.
But you never really let them have it. do you Abby?  No!  YOU found a way to let them THINK that they have what they want, as long as they're plugged in.  And here's the best part.  You charge them for it!
You have no idea what goes on in here when you're not looking, do you?  People don't come here to pretend to be rock stars, or to go surfing!  They come here to get away with murdering their bosses, and screwing each others' wives.  They come here to cut themselves, overdose, and jump off of buildings.  They come here to live out their darkness, not their dreams!

JAMESON:
Where's the Boy!
GUARD:
Sir! We received a transmission that the leak was fixed and that we were to return to base.
JAMESON:
WHAT!  I don't know what you're trying to pull here Captain, but if you don't get back out there and do the job I told you to do, Alpha 7 is going to end up being the new code for bathroom mishaps on the arcade floor!  Understood?
GUARD:
Negative Sir....*sigh*..I was sure that
JAMESON:
I don't know what you THINK you heard, and I don't care right now!  Get back out there and do your job, NOW!
